Tessenjutsu is the Japanese martial art of using the tessen, which is a folding fan designed for self-defence. The word "tessenjutsu" can be broken down into two components: "tessen" (iron fan), and "jutsu" (art). Therefore, Tessenjutsu can be translated as the "art of the iron fan".
Historically, tessen were used by samurai and other warriors in feudal Japan as a concealed weapon that could be easily carried and used as a defensive tool in situations where traditional weapons like swords or spears might be impractical. The tessen could also be used to signal commands on the battlefield.
In Tessenjutsu, practitioners learn how to use the tessen for self-defence techniques, including strikes, blocks, joint locks, and throws. Training typically involves both solo and paired practice, with an emphasis on fluid and efficient movements. The art also includes strategies for disarming opponents and using the tessen in combination with other martial arts techniques.
While Tessenjutsu is not as widely practiced as some other Japanese martial arts, it has historical significance and is preserved by those interested in traditional martial arts and Japanese cultural history.
